Dallas Apartment and Art in Fort Worth

statler dallas stay alfred jackson pool

We rented an apartment in Dallas for Memorial Day weekend. We had two bedrooms with king sized beds, a sofa-bed in the living room, a full bath in each bedroom, and one half bath in the living room. We also made good use of the full kitchen and all the amenities. I made a hot breakfast in the room each morning. We got up early and used the gym. We lounged by the pool... It quickly became a home.

Picked up some cheese. The selection difference between Dallas/Austin cheese shops seems to have vanished. It's still fun to stop at Scardello's.

celestial beerworks dallas neipa

Our favorite TX brewery, Celestial. We took an expansive picnic of sushi, pizza, cheese, nuts and prosciutto.

I love this time of day. The scene above was mostly dull gray and brown before the sunset illuminated it. For just a brief moment, it was all pink, orange and violet.  And then it was gone.

There was a second rooftop pool for adults. We enjoyed the views. The weather was just amazing this weekend.

statler dalas

We really enjoyed the Statler. There are so many nicely designed spaces to enjoy.

We took the kids to The Modern in Fort Worth.

This was pic number five or six. He only faced me when I asked "How do you intend to pay for lunch? What about getting back to Dallas... did you intend to ride with your family?"

Then we took them to The Kimbell.

(I had to get all sneaky to grab that pic above. #2 son doesn't cooperate with my constant picture taking)

The Fort Worth Water Gardens can seem serene and seduce your attention. But don't think there isn't a real risk of injury as you go down those elevated concrete pavers. I went about half way down, and turned back. The daughter kept a safe distance from the pit entirely.

We took our picnic to Turning Point. I enjoyed TIPA at both brewery we visited. That stuff will eliminate a bad mood quickly.

Kat and I enjoyed dinner at Fine China. We got a 10% discount for staying at the Statler. They gave us a code, that we entered into a payphone in the basement. A secret door popped open and allowed us entry to a Speakeasy.

It was a fun space. We escaped shortly after a DJ arrived and played music that did not appeal to our ears. We got up early the next morning and easily made the drive back to Austin in good time.  The boys have just a few more days of school... then summer is really here.

Barbara's house of chairs and Laura's dueling Alexa devices

Kat and I went to Barbara's for a party. She has an amazing collection of chairs, art, and objects of interest. It's wonderfully curated. There are many interesting things strewn about, but not so much that it feels cluttered. We moved often, trying to sit in ALL of them..

alexa speaks to fire tv

Laura came through for less than 48 hours. I ran over to help mount a Fire (amazon) TV. We celebrated with chocolate chip cookies made by #2 son. Then, I got the TV on her wifi and it issued a demo.... The TV was explaining how you can talk to it, as ALEXA. And that's when things got weird.... The TV said "for example, you can say ALEXA, PLAY ME THE HITS". That's when her ALEXA speaker in the same room responded, to the command issued by the TV! The ALEXA speaker replied (to the TV) "I'm not sure I got that. How about this", and started to play music. There I was between an ALEXA TV and an ALEXA speaker, now both playing, and communicating (poorly) with each other. I had to jump in as things were getting out of hand "ALEXA, STOP!" I begged.

Rain prevented me from taking the 951 for a drive to Driftwood on Saturday. So Kat and I took it to run an errand on Sunday. The thirty year old German A/C system is struggling with the Texas heat and humidity.

hopdoddy michelada

Kat and I went to Hopdoddy. The Burger was good, and Kat enjoyed her michelada. My margarita was SO sweet, I was planning to send it back. But we never saw our server again... (everything is prepaid at a counter before being seated at a full service table).

spring rain in austin equals additional yardwork

Between finishing up the Design class, and working at a local middle school, I haven't been able to keep up with yardwork. We've had so much rain, the grass (and weeds) have been growing faster than I can get to them. I attempted to mow the whole yard this weekend (I usually do it in four sections on different days). I only hit one stump (mower is only slightly damaged). But the heat and humidity took quite a toll on me. I'm glad to have it looking better. Less rain would be great for a while...

Design 1 Conclusion

I believe my artwork above is hanging for the West Austin Studio Tour, at ACC.

My contribution to the last large class assignment (bottom right in pic above) was roughly based from a photo I took while in Yarmouth Nova Scotia.

On the last meeting of my Design 1 class, we were asked to do three new/unique paintings. This was fun as we could really do whatever we wanted. My classmate Sophia and I managed to get ours complete (hers are the three on the right).

My contribution above was very roughly influenced by an image the Professor (Brian Johnson) used several times as an example, The Duel After the Masquerade

Much of what I do/am, is a direct result of where I've been, and photos taken. This was a fairly straight rendering based on a pic taken in the Groton State Forest (I'm so ready to get back to Vermont for the summer!)

The daughter also did a painting (watercolor) for her Design 1 class that was based on our trip to Nova Scotia.

sunset hue slice

To close off all the time I spent studying Hue, Value, Saturation... I saw this as we sat down for dinner after my last class for the semester. The sun was setting, and for just a brief moment, a vivid slice of orange, violet, and yellow cut through the back yard. And then it was gone.

Teacher Appreciation Week!

It's the end of the semester and I have a lot to do before my final class. I was thinking I hadn't done much this week, but then I checked my iPhone (where I take most pics lately) and it appears I did have a busy week... here are a few highlights.

monsieur schuster

It was teacher appreciation week. I taught a French class, and the parents treated us to a generous buffet of tacos.

teacher appreciation week at pluckers

I went to Plucker's to collect my free appetizer and half priced glass of wine for Teacher Appreciation week. #2 son consumed five Fire In The Hole wings in six minutes. He's training for the twenty five wing challenge.

I joined the daughter's Design class for a field trip to Blanton Museum of Art.

We had sushi with Jorge at Chinatown.

The HOA at my Mom's house had their annual get together.

Now I have to mat these eight small paintings, and make three more new/unique paintings for my final class meeting of my Design class tomorrow....

From the teacher's lounge.... to the wine room (the octopus of regret)

2019 is proving to be a real challenge. I've picked up a bit of extra work on days where I can find the time. Usually two days a week.

teacher's lounge

Have you ever wondered what the Teacher's Lounge looks like at a Middle School? They've accepted me as one of their own. I've been subbing a few classes.

#1 son has been helping to host Smash Bros tournaments. One of his best friends had a Birthday, and they had a tournament to celebrate.

I went along. The adults sat on the back deck and enjoyed the views...

"What? you have a whole WINE ROOM?! Yes, I'd love to see it!"

"Oh really.... a valuable and highly rated wine? I guess we could taste some more... if you insist."

They had these wine glass hats to keep gnats out. I thought mine could use a little something extra.
