Fried Turkey and being Thankful 2018

It was a great Thanksgiving, once again.

turkey fry of 2018

We oriented the turkey correctly this year (ass-up). It is a bit more difficult to load it this way, but I had help.

daughter and the chees board

The Daughter was in charge of the cheese board, #1 son set the table, and #2 son was in charge of taking the pics.

The guys mostly tend the burner and have a few beers. When the oil gets to 385F, we kill the flame and carefully drop the bird.

When the oil temp drops to 275, we reignite the flame and regulate it between 275-285F. The math worked out to 52 minutes of fry time for a 12.4 lb turkey.

The turchetta, ancho and orange zest pork loin, mushroom bread pudding (dressing) and brussels sprouts… all turned out well.

#2 son participated in the annual Holiday chalkboard art (his cat themed work is on the left above). My board also displays the turkey fry math.

Foggy Window (Monkish) and Fall projects

fall sun on Austin Modhouse Nov 2018 78746

I love the warm glow of Fall sunsets. Kat's persimmon tree has turned golden and leaves are starting to drop. A few persimmon have survived the year. The time to harvest is near.

For a few years, I tried (unsuccessfully) to trade for beer from Monkish.

A friend traveled to Los Angeles for the holiday and hauled me back some.

My Mom and I have started to repaint the garage. The blue was just TOO much. I like the gray with just a small bit of color.

Greenhouse, sort of... and so much music

greenhouse from sliding glass door panel

Kat's garden has been most successful since relocating and creating a shade structure for it. We were so successful protecting the garden from sun, we are applying an effort against freeze. We had a few old sliding glass door panels. We used those, along with some plastic sheeting and scrap roofing material. It's not pretty, but it just might work.

west lake hill gate construction

I cut a section of fencing, to connect the front path, to the rear path. I fabricated a gate, dug out enough earth to plant it. Filled the footer with concrete and welded the gate into the existing fence. It works quite well.

1972 BMW 2002

I have the 1972 BMW 2002 (rare 2002S from Belgium with FPS wheels) mostly put back together. I'm not happy how the silver paint finished (I'm not a professional) but we can sort out a few mechanical upgrades, then send it to a real spray booth. I did take it for a quick spin around the neighborhood.

So much music!

pinot noir tasting lost creek austin tx

Dinner at a friend's house was a blind tasting of five different Pinot Noir. Four from Oregon and one from CA. We easily picked out the two $50 bottles (the CA $50 bottle was the winner overall). This dispels the myth that there is no difference from a $15 to $50 bottle (at least with this group of Pinots consumers).

We enjoyed duck breast with the Pinot, it was a fun evening.

E.A.S.T (east austin studio tour) 2018

shark art east austin studio tour

We took the kids out to visit artist friends on the East Austin Studio Tour. Stunt double for #2 son found some shark art he really liked by Brian Maclaskey.

EAST sort of reminds me how SX was years back. We found free beer, whiskey, Tito's... the people were out and enjoying the artsty party atmosphere.

We caught some live music at Zilker Brewing. Darth Vader sat in with the band.

Kat and I made a run to our cabin in Wimberley. A layer of dust has settled on things down there as we don't visit frequently.

Did I accomplish anything this week?

airstream plympic rivet repair replace

I replaced a bunch of popped rivets in the Airsteam, and patched a small hole in the skin.

I nearly finished welding up a gate that will connect the front and rear path I've been working on for so long. I think I'll weld in the hinges this morning after I publish this entry.

camp live oak eanes westlake austin

The most notable event, #2 son went off to camp. This is sort of a rite of passage for kids finishing their last year in Elementary School. Our kids don't do "sleepover" events with friends. So the trip to Live Oak is really their first time spending the night outside of the house (not with a close family member). Kat was trying to prepare him with so many last minute things, snacks, drinks, ink pens.... He kept trying to refuse "Mom, I don't need that. They feed us, they told us NOT to bring water bottles.... When would I have time to draw?".  It reminded me of trying to leave Popo's house (Kat's Mom). She's often urging us to take food or random items as we're trying to exit. Once Popo tried to give me a surplus Army life raft, "I can't even fit this in my luggage" got me out of the raft. I finally agreed to take a surplus military mess kit as it made her happy for me to take something. And just this morning I whispered to #2 son "just take the pens!, it'll make her happy". We can all rest assured that he will be well prepared at camp should he need to take notes or sketch something.

The sidewalk end, HEB trip #2.

bee cave road sidewalk west lake hills november 2018

We rode the bikes to HEB again this weekend. It was a success! The sidewalk is just a bit more complete. At least they did move the portapotty out of the way. We limited our grocery shopping to the ONE item we went for. This afforded a more stable basket load for the ride back. No spills on the way home!

This last little stretch is all that remains without sidewalk.

Kat woke up motivated to get rid of extra rice. She decided 0-musubi would be a good lunch rice dish. The too much rice problem has been solved. The salmon with scallion and sriracha mayo was pretty good!

vintage bmw 2002 fps

I'd like to get the 1972 BMW 2002 back as a fun driver. I've come to terms with the fact that I'll never be able to spray silver auto paint to a satisfactory level myself. Common knowledge also dictates that the mechanicals should be sorted before paint. I'm putting it back together for now. I've compiled a list of a few upgrades, then we will have a pro finish the silver paint.

We stopped by Southern Heights for their 1st anniversary party. The Jam session raspberry kettle sour was good. I typically don't go for fruited beers, but this balanced the fruit and tart well .

Aaron finally sent us a care package from Oregon! Some friends assembled for a beer share and Indian food made from an Instapot. It was a good time for sure.

Eanes Carnival #14, the LAST one.

eanes carnival 2018

I have attended the Eanes Elementary Fall Carnival fourteen consecutive times. They tried something new this year, the carnival was after school on a Friday instead of a weekend. One obvious result was there were fewer parents available to volunteer. Lines were LONG! It took twenty minutes just to pick up the wrist band. Some games had no adult attendant at all.

Once we got the wristband to play games, he wanted a shaved ice.

Another line....

He eventually wore himself out and we walked home from our final Eanes Carnival.

Spooky Meatloaf for Halloween

spooky halloween zombie head meatloaf

I don't think Kat has ever really eaten meatloaf. Until recently, I know she'd never made a meatloaf. She surely doesn't like scary or gory things. Yet, she made this meatloaf for Halloween this year.

We took it to our usual Halloween party with friends in Lost Creek. The spooky zombie meatloaf head was a huge hit, and tasted good too.

We do get a few Fall colors here in Austin/Westlake. This is the low water crossing by Red Bud Island. The water is still murky and flowing fast with all flood gates remaining open.
