Blanco River recovery, Sept 2016 and a few sweets.

We put in some extra labor on Labor Day. We are still cleaning up our cabin on the Blanco from the floods of 2015. Kat shoveled mud off the patio while I worked on the floors in the screen room. I'm not sure the cabin will see the same utility it once held for us. That's OK, we have an airstream.

Labor Day is when we hope to see the Summer heat start to wane. It was 103 if you consider the Heat Index. We cooled off on the banks of the Blanco. Some of the Cypress trees are starting to recover. We did find a shady spot. The water was crystal clear.

It's hard to imagine that the flood level of the Blanco was over 40 ft above normal. All those trees were completely under water, along with many homes. Many new homes are being rebuilt, some on stilts. Many are much nicer than the homes that washed away last year.

While in Houston, Kat and I dined at a Portuguese restaurant. It was not that good, but the glass of Port we had at the end of the meal was enjoyed. We came home and bought a Port from the same maker, but it was not as good. We obviously had the ten y.o. tawny at the restaurant. We hatched a plan to get rid of the mediocre Port, PORT CAKES!

Kat made THREE different Port cakes. We never did all agree which was the best. My mom and #2 son also made a fresh Peach Cobbler to add to the evening sweets...  Yes, we went to bed with a tummy ache.

The daughter also likes to make treats...

maple cupcakes

She made these Vermont Maple syrup cupcake. I think she enjoys making them as much (maybe more) than she does eating them. She's mastering her craft with the Russian (pastry) tips.
