mardi gras shreveport 2009- entry #2

this fire kept me warm for 14 hours.  the sun was down and we could hear the parade coming.

more dancin' back in the party tent.  troy had his stereo up to 11 all day/night long.

she was all packed up and ready to go home for the night.  us guys stayed at the site till the police made us leave our fire; 11 PM.  it was a good 14 hour party.

we got up sunday morning and loaded up for another parade.  first, we met some of our vintage bmw friends at superior grill.  then to the parade.

kat got some crawfish

pass the baby

the kids got loads of crap beads at the highland parade.

mardi gras 2009-shreveport entry #1

friday night was the float loading parade.

boys play rough.  lots of fake kicks, punches and faux violence...  it makes us nervous

kids got to get on the floats and see all the crap beads that will be thrown out during the parade.

that is one BIG fire pit

got our regular site along the parade route all set up.  bloody mary helped fight the cold and rain.

troy's old school ride.

big wind wrecked the neighbors tent city.  some of it broke and went into the trash.

of course, he loves pork cracklin's

the kids love when the street is shut down and they run free.

kat got a bubble generator

my tofu bratwurst

silly string

sidewalk art forum

sun is setting.  almost time for the parade.

lady behind troy had a wireless headset on.  she was on the PA and troy went over and gave her some love and then a little breakdance.

there was lots of meat for carnivores.  vegetarian me almost didn't make it.  some girls saw I was in a pickle and gave me left over pizza to hold me over till kat brought the tofu dogs.

the last dance of 2009-cotillion

hey dude!  you have your arm in the wrong place!  clearly out of his element at the austin country club.

pick axe paul the beet farmer

blondie jam session

I happened upon a jam session.  it was great to see the girls playing guitar together.  this is what i had dreamed of, except the dude still can't play guitar.  I've made up my mind that I am going to learn to play at least one song from beginning to end.

veg shitake for dinner

love the fresh shitake mushrooms.  kat has started to count the days until I give up my veg diet.  I told her that I might just keep at it as I can't really see indulging on march 1st.  this news was not well received "OH NO!  it's not fair to the rest of us, don't you remember how much you love bacon?  what about a big cheeseburger?"  OK, now I am thinking about BLT again.

#1 son's class had a nice valentine's day performance and dance.

while standing up there in front of all the parents he did this: pulled up his pants leg to display this bandaid, bent over and removed bandaid, held it close to his eye for closer inspsection, then applied it to his nose, removed from nose and replaced it on his knee.  he did it THREE times!

I thought it was just the act of a child who was unaware and oblivious to his surroundings.  I asked him if he'd realized what he was doing up there and it turned out I was wrong.  he said he did because he thought it was funny.  so it was an expression of self amusement and I had to respect that.

on our way to the v-day cotillion.

harve benard

kat's new to her harve benard jacket.

the current house projects involve relocating various landscaping elements.

pick axe paul

we have very little dirt beneath our feet.

most any hole requires a pick axe.

I really like physical work.  I've had desk jobs and I found them very unsettling.  I need a new big project.  for now, I dig holes.

I had to drain the rain water from the lap pool cover.  marvin got comfortable along the edge.

I planted these beets about a year ago.  I never water them and the soil is really poor.  and still they thrive despite our drought.  I know, you don't like beets.  but, most people who claim that are basing their opinion from slimy sweet canned beets.  not the same as fresh oven roasted beets with blue cheese crumbled on top.  I think we actually like the beet greens better than the beets.  really, try cooking some up like swiss chard.  I like them with crispy bacon... ohhhh bacon.... (licking lips)

no hallmark card for you.  but I do offer a frower I found growing near the beets

orange plastic horsey, scorpions and snakes

#1 son went to a friend's birthday party this past weekend.  they had some creepy crawly entertainment!

he said this centipede will issue a nasty sting and is very common around here... great.

tarantula and many many other bugs and salamanders and snakes etc.

#1 son is not into nature like his sister is.  she would have held the snakes and paid attention.  but he was more interested in his friend's bakugan.

he didn't care to go into the house where they were handling tarantulas.  he just wanted to run and climb.

tumor head horse

I may have over inflated the rody horse.  one side of it's head has a big bulge and the plastic material is thinner there.

didn't seem to detract from the fun and bounciness of it all.

falling off seems to part of the fun/learning process.

thrift store shoe find

kat has a new favorite store.  it's a thrift store operated by the easter seals people.  she loves to go buy what would otherwise expensive clothing for just a few dollars.  some guy who has the same size foot as me must have just dumped off his shoe collection.  it was hard to leave the other six pair of Kenneth Cole shoes on the shelf at less than $10 a pair.  but I already have many many shoes.  three pair did manage to find their way home with us.

mostly, it's been a crappy head cold week.  we got the taxes done.  next year I might once again lobby to let the CPA do the taxes and leave the turbotax out of it.  CPA never once got stressed out about numbers and receipts etc.  at least we're done.

rainy monday

rainy monday morning.

chicken-dog, rion, the bubble and bakugan balls

annual birthday party.  it is really HIS birthday but we combine the effort and celebrate her 1/2 birthday so we only have ONE big party.  her's falls in the summer months and we can never get things coordinated with her friends to celebrate.  lots of kids from the area are off travelling for the hot texas summer.

I like to see the house filled with joyous kids running everywhere.  nothing was broken this year.

chicken-dog circus was GREAT fun.

the talking chicken

some danger

dog tricks

they had to have two cakes as some kids don't like chocolate....

they opened gifts after everybody had gone home.

one extra nice parent even brought a gift for the dude!

we finally had the jumphouse to ourself

crystal mining is going well.  they got some great gifts.

we had a second round of guests in the evening.  I had three pizza crusts leftover from the kids's party so we had more pizza for dinner.  the carmelized onion and pineapple with goat cheese and asiago drizzled with white truffle oil was fantastic!  the artichoke heart and caper pizza was no slouch either.

pass the baby.

we finally found a rogue bmw mechanic to replace the clutch in the 73 bmw 2002tii.  I was clearly not getting around to doing it myself.  you can see how I had to clean the windscreen so I could drive safely.

sunday had us at another chinese new years celebration.  there were several different singing and dancing groups and dragon/lion dancers came from all over.

the firecrackers were LOUD!!!  pieces rained down on me as I was taking pics.

the fellow above seemed to largely responsible for all the mischief.

SIX RIONS!  the smoke and noise made them go nuts!

you can almost visualize all the tasty dishes kat is dreaming of eating at TC noodle house

I had the yellow curry stir fry with tofu (one more month of no meat for me, then I can get my BLT!)

yes, the dude found some orange alligator loafers to go with his belt.  the asian grocery up there is quite large and doesn't smell that bad (doesn't smell that great either, but comparatively, the dude approves and his personal space is not violated as often as when we go to the small crowded asian market)

fresh shitake mushrooms are MUCH cheaper at the asian market than at the white-boy store.  they are always the #1 priority of any trip to the asian market.

he attended a birthday party that was held at the UT indoor practice field; the bubble

he really enjoyed "punching that dummy"

it was nearly 80 degrees the first day of february.  they ran around on the outdoor practice field too.

danny choo style

we gave this bakugan ball a danny choo style makeover.  these balls are very popular with the male kindergarten population.  he received a few of them for his birthday.  do kids like bakugan balls in your neck of the woods?

also, I read that austin is planning the nation's largest solar collecting field!  will be one of the largest in the world!
